What is an anaesthesiologist?

Patient care is unavoidably team based and anaesthesiologists are a vital part of the peri operative care team. Alternatively called peri operative care physicians, they are medical specialists involved in looking after patients around the time they are having an operation, which can be usefully divided into these stages:

Preoperative period

Includes patient interview for risk assessment, optimizing for surgery and planning and explanation of anaesthetic technique.

Intraoperative period

During surgery, where the patient may have a general (‘asleep’) or regional anaesthetic depending on the surgery performed and other factors.

Postoperative period

After the surgery where the patient is in the recovery room, then back to the ward, high care or the critical care unit.

Our scope of practice is wide and includes looking after patients in critical care units, procedural sedation, and resuscitation. The period and requirements for anaesthesiologists is similar to that of other medical specialists and includes:
